Gløgg | Healthy Mulled Wine for Christmas

January 19, 2020 | ChristmasDrink

I finally got my head around making this famous christmas drink that we all love and cherish here in the north- Mulled wine. I prefer making mulled wine compared to buying the ready made stuff which is loaded with sugar. This recipe for mulled wine is a recipe that I make year after year, with a few adjustements every time. You might as well call it a tradition by now.

When they started to drink mulled wine in Scandinavia a very long time ago, they did it because it was supposed to be good for their health. When years passed by and the sugar industry took over, the drink went from being healthy, to unhealthy. Isn’t it a good idea to get back to our roots and make this drink as healthy as it was supposed to be?

A Healthy Mulled Wine

This recipe for Mulled wine is naturally healthy as it doesn’t contain any nasties, such as refined sugar or preservatives. With its frozen berries, smooth honey and delicious apple juice, this one of my winning recipes that I never get tired of. Loaded with antioxidants from the raspberries, mulberries and blueberries this will keep you sound and healthy during the winter season.

I want to encourage you to use what you have for this recipe, besides some of the key ingredients. The ingredients you need is raspberry and blueberry to give it both the taste and the color. Besides these two ingredients you can play around with different berries, spices and fruit. This recipe started out with raspberries, blueberries, water and spices. Now I’ve develpoed it to something more and something exciting. I added clementine to get that lovely aroma and taste as well as apple juice to give it that zangy taste. What’s not to love?

This drink is naturally child friendly, but if you want a more adult version feel free to add a bottle of red wine or some other fancy smancy stuff! Yum!

I hope you will enjoy this little christmas treat!

Healthy Mulled Wine

Yield 1 liter

A delicious and healthy mulled wine for the holidays- packed with antioxidants from all the lovely berries!

200 gram blueberries, frozen

400 gram raspberries, frozen

1 thumb sized ginger

1 tsp cloves, whole

3 star anise

1 cinnamon stick, ceylon

1 liter water

350 ml honey (or to taste)

  1. Bring berries, ginger, spices and water to a boil and let simmer for an hour so the berries release all of its flavor.
  2. Strain the liquid from the berries and stir in honey (as much or little as you feel like)!
  3. Add a bottle of red wine if serving to adults or without for a healthy christmas!

If you, like me, don't always care for the healthy- add 1 bottle of wine before serving or add it during the boiling process to get rid of the alcohol, but what's the fun in that?
